On November 15, 2024, FlowReady, in partnership with Girls Outloud Luweero-Uganda, reached a significant milestone by empowering 240 girls from two primary schools in Luweero District. This collaboration, held at Luweero Junior School and St. Phillip Nursery and Primary School, addressed critical issues of menstrual hygiene, sexual reproductive health, and the stigma surrounding menstruation.

Creating Impact Where It Matters Most

The beneficiaries, aged 10–15, received reusable sanitary pads, bars of soap, toilet rolls, and menstrual health education. These reusable pads, provided by Afripads, are designed to last up to two years, offering a sustainable solution to menstrual poverty. The project also engaged parents, teachers, and community leaders to create a supportive environment for the girls.

Key Highlights:

  • Expert sessions were led by Ms. Nabagesera Gillian (Counselor) and Ms. Nabukonde Dorcas (Social Worker), focusing on menstrual hygiene, SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights), and prevention of STIs.
  • Senior women teachers participated in training to ensure continuous support for the girls.
  • An interactive Q&A session, led by Ms. Nakiryoowa Hanifah, rewarded girls for their active participation, fostering confidence and excitement around learning.

Voices from the Community

The impact of this initiative was deeply felt by the community:

  • One parent expressed gratitude, saying,

No more spending on disposable pads. I’ll guide my daughter to use these reusable ones properly. Thank you for this blessing!”

  • School staff were equally appreciative, noting it was the first time their schools had hosted such an educative and empowering program.

The project also sparked interest in establishing health clubs within schools to continue providing menstrual and health education, ensuring the momentum carries forward.

Lessons and Challenges

While the project was a success, it revealed challenges, including the high demand for menstrual products in other schools and the need for emergency disposable pads for girls unprepared for unexpected periods. Boys, too, expressed interest in similar programs addressing their needs.

Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Future

FlowReady and Girls Outloud Luweero are committed to:

  1. Expanding outreach to more schools, addressing menstrual poverty and stigma.
  2. Establishing health clubs as safe spaces for continued education and mentorship.
  3. Preparing pre-menarchial girls through early education, helping them transition confidently into adolescence.

This initiative reflects FlowReady’s mission of empowering girls with the knowledge and resources to thrive. Together with local organizations, schools, and communities, FlowReady is transforming lives—one girl at a time.
